Your mission is your ultimate destination, the place all your goals are taking you to, at least, as best as you can define it right now. Some people seem to be born with a dream and, if you’re one of those people, you’ll know exactly what your mission is. The reason that having a clear and specific mission adds value to setting great goals and having an incredible strategy is that it helps you stay focused. It also helps other people who are going to help you in your business be aligned with your journey. Sure, you can skip ahead to Step 2 and start setting any goal, but if you really want to maximize your results, it’s important to know your mission and only set goals that help you get there. To help you crystallize your mission, take it out of your head and write it down.

Try to be as specific as possible and don’t forget to give yourself permission to dream big and to dive into enough specifics to make your mission unique to you. Create three columns. In the first column, write down who will be impacted by your mission. Is it about your whole family? Is it your business? Is it a segment of the population? In column 2, write down how those people will be affected or impacted. This could be something that the people in column 1 are doing, a new state of being, or something they have learned or achieved. Finally, the 3rd column addresses the how question. In the 3rd column, write down any constraints or specific requirements around the way in which the impact will occur. If you aren’t a wordsmith, you can leave these three columns as your mission, or, if you are so inclined, go ahead and rewrite the content of the three columns into one or two catchy sentences that will be your mission. Here is an example from my own life. One of the biggest realizations for me in setting better goals was understanding that there are actually two types of goals that work together to get us what we want. The first type of goal that you need to set is an outcome. In fact, your mission is an outcome goal.

Get A Grip

We naturally tend to put ourselves at the center of our own stories and this causes us to phrase outcomes as though they are in our control. For example, I bet at one point, maybe even now, you have the goal to make more money Unless you are the Treasury, though, the outcome you are really thinking about is getting other people to hand their money over to you. Once we separate the outcomes from the direct actions we can take, we can start to set truly great goals. Now, let’s go a little deeper in our understanding of outcomes. I break the category of outcome goals into two subtypes. First is what I like to call an Impact Goal. This is something that you want to have happen which is somehow physical in nature. It can be a new state of being, a possession, or an action that you want someone else to take. The second type I like to call a Perception Goal. A Perception Goal is when the outcome represents a change in the way someone thinks or feels. Often, but not always, when we set an Impact Goal, we realize that we need to achieve a Perception Goal first in order to have a chance at the desired impact. In other words, it’s often the case that in order to change the way someone acts, you first have to change the way they think or feel.

Have Love, Will Travel

Whenever you find that you’ve identified a Perception Goal, you have a big clue about the kinds of actions you can take. Can you guess what they are? They will probably be actions related to marketing or branding. Take a moment to think about your mission and define one to three outcome goals that would need to happen in order to get you closer to achieving your mission. Label each outcome goal as either an Impact Goal or Perception Goal. Now that you know what the outcome is that you’re trying to achieve, it’s time to get hyper specific about what actions are within your control that are likely to have the desired outcome. I call these Execution Goals because they are within your direct control to execute. Your Execution Goal is not a task, it’s the sum or the end point of several tasks. These goals should be written in a way the provides measurable outcomes, so everybody knows when and if the Execution Goal has been completed. Call all my existing clients and tell them about the new product. If your outcome goals have a time by which they need to be accomplished in order to be relevant, then all the subsequent Execution Goals should be time bound, too. If your outcomes don’t have a timeline, your Execution Goals may naturally have one. For example, you may have a marketing related Execution Goal that involves taking advantage of the holiday season. This would obviously become irrelevant if you didn’t get it done by the holidays. Now, go back to your notes and for each outcome goal you’ve written, try writing down at least one Execution Goal. Your goals and your strategy are only as good as your ability to execute them and that’s why you should create a written plan of action for each Execution Goal.
